Canada's women's Soccer U-17 team draws Chile in Santiago

Canada's women's U-17 team played to a 1:1 draw against host Chile in an international friendly match today. Canada opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before Chile countered in the 80th minute. Both goals were scored following free kicks, with Chantale Campbell scoring the lone goal for Canada.

This was the first of two international matches between Canada and Chile. The match was played at the Complejo Deportivo Quilín of the Federación de Fútbol de Chile. The next match will be played on Sunday 1 August.

Three Canadian teams are in action this week, with the women's U-17 team in Chile, the men's U-17 in Laval, QC, and the Para Soccer team in Milton, ON. Canada's women's U-15 team opens camp this weekend in Sunrise, FL, USA.

"The 1-1 draw was a fair result for both teams," said Canadian women's U-17 head coach Bryan Rosenfeld. "We were not, however, as sharp as we needed to be for an international match. We will need to prepare and focus for our next match on Sunday."

Canada's starting XI featured Sabrina D'Angelo in goal, Vanessa Kovacs, Alison Clarke, Charléne Achille and Yazmin Ongtengco-Hintzen at defence, Chantale Campbell, Nicole Setterlund and Diamond Simpson at midfield, and Kinley McNicoll, Nour Ghoneim and Caroline Beaulne up front.

Midfields Nicole Setterlund and Chantale Campbell controlled the play well throughout the first half, although Canada was not able to generate a goal. The score was 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Before the start of the second half, coach Rosenfeld made four changes. Coming off were Setterlund, Ghoneim, Beaulne and McNicoll; coming on were midfielder Jade Kovacevic and forwards Haisha Cantave, Abigail Raymer and Haillie Price.

With a new offensive unit up front in the second half, Canada was able to get behind the Chile defence. Chile countered, though, with a spurt of its own which led to the tying goal. Canada's goal came in the 53rd minute on a free kick by Campbell from 20 metres out. The kick went directly from Campbell's boot into the net.

The Chile goal was less direct. The free kick deflected off the wall and a rebound deceived D'Angelo after it bounced off the post. Chile pounced on the second rebound for a tying goal of the match.

Late in the match, coach Rosenfeld made two changes. In the 81st minute, he replaced Simpson with the young Ashley Lawrence. Four minutes later, he switched Price for Zakiya McIntosh.

Canada, whose title sponsor is BMO Financial Group, is currently preparing for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2010. The Canadian team is training in Santiago, Chile from 25 July to 3 August.

Some European football teams may go bankrupt within two years

Global management consultants AT Kearney have warned leading clubs in the major European Leagues that they risk going out of business if they continue to pay “enormous salaries”.

The Munich-based company’s Football Sustainability Study, released this week, said that changes need to made to the financial controls of clubs if more cases of bankruptcy and administration are to be avoided.

The report said: “Running as normal companies, the leagues in Spain, England, and Italy would be bankrupt within two years.” It found financial statistics in some leagues as “shocking” because of enormous salaries and went on to describe how the desire to win trophies “encourages overinvestment and extreme risk-taking”.

Toronto FC Takes First Leg in CONCACAF Champions League

Toronto FC pulled off their first ever CONCACAF Champions League victory as they held a talented Club Deportivo Motagua off the scoresheet to take the first leg of qualifying 1-0 at BMO Field in Toronto.

Toronto put forth a great effort against the Honduran club which featured four players that represented Honduras in the World Cup, including former TFC midfielder Amado Gueverra.

TFC received reliable goalkeeping from Stefan Frei and solid defence from Nana Attakora and Adrian Cann. Meanwhile, Julian de Guzman and Dwayne De Rosario shined in the middle as they created numerous chances going forward but only Chad Barrett’s first half strike was able to crack the back of the net.

Toronto
’s goal came in the 21st minute when De Rosario put a wonderful pass ahead to a charging Barrett who drilled the ball with his left foot past the Motagua keeper, Donaldo Morales, to put TFC up 1-0.

The Reds generated numerous chances to score a second goal but were simply lacking the finish. In the 63rd minute Jacob Peterson received a pass at the edge of the box but his shot went just over the Motagua goal. Then in the 73rd minute, De Rosario ran down a pass from Maicon Santos but his shot was stopped by a diving Morales.

TFC were fortunate to escape with a victory as Motagua nearly equalized late in the game when Javier Portillo mishandled a pass from Georgie Welcome in 84th minute. Welcome ran into the box, crossed the ball from left to right to an open Portillo who was wide open but mistimed his shot and the ball was quickly cleared away by Attakora. The play drew gasps from the 18,891 fans in attendance as it looked certain that Toronto was once again about to allow a late goal but the gasps quickly transformed into a collective sigh of relief.

Barrett, who watched from the bench in the second half offered his thoughts on the match.

“I think we had the better of the chances throughout the game,” said Barrett. “And when it came down to closing out the game we did well to keep the zero but I thought we gave too many good chances, they had a good look. We got lucky that they didn’t capitalize.”

Coach Preki admitted his team was pushing for a second goal but could have played smarter in the latter stages of the match.

“Well we kept pushing forward, we were trying to get a second goal because we knew how important is the second goal,” said Preki. “The only thing is we have to be a little bit smarter when we do that because last five, six minutes we opened up gaps in the back, we almost paid for it. From that last standpoint we need to be a little bit cautious when we go forward and how we protect ourselves on the back.”

Gueverra, who played two seasons with the Reds and became a fan favourite, was excited about his return to Toronto.

"I am happy to be in Toronto again,” said Gueverra through a translator. “Thanks to Toronto FC, to all the team, to the fans, I sincerely appreciate the respect and love they showed me today. Congratulations to the team for the victory today. Now they have an advantage for the second game."

Heading to Tegucigalpa

With Tuesday’s win, Toronto is in a good position but will have their hands full next week when they travel to the hostile Estadio Nacional in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. TFC can advance to the group stage of Champions League with a win, tie or – and this is where it gets tricky – with a loss where they score at least one goal but also lose by a single goal. A loss of 1-0 would result in extra time and potentially penalty kicks to decide who advances. A loss by two or more goals would mean Toronto will be eliminated from the competition.

“Honduras is going to be tough,” added Barrett. “They’re going to be just as good if not better on their own field, they got the thick grass and they got their fans that hate us so it’s going to be tough.”

Toronto will play a league game in Kansas City this Saturday at 8:30pm before travelling to Honduras to play the second leg of the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, August 3rd at 8pm.

Bin Hammam predicts Asian football boom

Asian Football Confederation President Mohamed Bin Hammam predicts a bright future for the sport in the region as western investors turn their attention to Asian clubs featuring some of the world’s best players.

“No, I’m not mad,” Hammam told a packed auditorium at the first Soccerex Asia Forum in Singapore today. “I am optimistic that European investors will invest in Asian clubs and I want to see the best players coming to Asia because we can pay the same salaries ands benefits as Europe.”

Bin Hammam underscored the size of the task facing Asian football as it strives to professionalise and compete with the best in the world: at present the region boast less than 150 fully professional clubs.

“We want to see that number rise to 700 or 800,” he said.

Seamus O’Brien, CEO of World Sports Group, later supported the President’s view of the future. O’Brien, an expert in Asian sports marketing with more than 20 years experience in the region, said he is sure that the rise of Asia as a global force in club football is an ‘economic inevitability’ fuelled by the booming economies of many Asian states.

Turning his attention to the World Cup, Bin Hammam, a member of FIFA’s executive committee described South Africa 2010 as a “fantastic” tournament: “There had been a lot of people who doubted the ability of South Africa to host the event. But it was safe and the people of South Africa did extraordinary work.

“The organisation was excellent, the stadia were excellent and I don’t think any other country could have done a better job. A lot of credit must go to FIFA President Sepp Blatter who pushed for this while a lot of us doubted.”

Bin Hammam, who opposed FIFA’s decision to decide on the host of the next two World Cups at the same meeting in December, believes that selecting an Asian host would help boost the game throughout the region.

“Each of the bids has strengths and weaknesses and every bid has its sympathisers (supporters within FIFA),” he added. “It is up to the bidding nation to convince the voters that they are better than the others. But it is clear that the harder they work the better their chance.”
